Since its inception in the early 1980s, digital recording has brought about a revolution in the music and film production industry. So what is this digital recording? It is the making of a record using digital audio technology. In this technology, a microphone captures the sound and converts it into an analogue (wavelike) form. Then an analog-to-digital converter converts the analog signal to digital and then a digital-to-analog converter reverses the process before the signal is output from the speaker. The conversion to digital is an essential step which allows for manipulation, storage, transmission and retrieval of an audio signal. This has seen rampant improvements being made in the production industries.

As much as the recorders have an inbuilt microphone, it may not always give you the sound quality you need, especially if you record a compressed format. For this reason external microphones are required. There are many different types of microphones from which you can choose the most appropriate.

  • Condenser microphone¬†– powered by external power such as that of a battery, this audio equipment serves to give high quality signals storing the energy as an electrostatic field. It is very sensitive and responsive hence captures even the slightest of sound. However, it is prone to distortion by loud sounds.
  • Dynamic microphone – this is ideal for general purposes because it is versatile and has few moving parts. They have internal amplifiers hence do not need external sources and also can withstand high sounds from amplifiers and other sources. They are tough enough to withstand rough handling.
  • Electorates condenser microphone¬†– this is just like the condenser but its capacitor has inbuilt permanent voltage, hence no need for external power in most cases.

This is the audio equipment associated with getting an output. It is the software that processes the sound and outputs it and the hardware involved in the procedure. A computer with a windows or Mac operating system would give a good job. This is used to manipulate the sound and output it on a speaker or even transform it into bits for storage in compact disks.
